E-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. According to the Global E-waste Monitor, the world generated over 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste in 2019 alone, and this number keeps rising every year. Here’s why it’s a serious issue:

1. Toxic Materials:
Electronic devices often contain hazardous materials like lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, and flame retardants. If these materials are not properly handled or disposed of, they can contaminate soil, water, and air, which poses serious risks to the environment and human health.

2. Environmental Pollution:
When e-waste is dumped in landfills or burned, toxic substances can leach into the ground or be released into the atmosphere. This can harm ecosystems and contribute to air and water pollution.

3. Health Risks:
In many developing countries, e-waste is processed by informal workers who burn or dismantle devices without proper protection. These workers, including children in some cases, are exposed to dangerous chemicals that can cause respiratory problems, skin conditions, neurological damage, and even cancer.

4. Waste of Resources:
Electronics contain valuable materials like gold, silver, copper, and rare earth metals. When we throw these devices away instead of recycling them, we waste precious resources that could be recovered and reused.
