Have you ever wondered what happens to your old phone, broken headphones, or that dusty laptop in your drawer? Most of us just toss them away or forget they even exist. But all of these devices are part of a growing global crisis called electronic waste, or e-waste.

What is E-Waste?
E-waste is any discarded electronic device—from smartphones and TVs to batteries, cables, and printers. As technology continues to evolve faster than ever, more and more gadgets become outdated, leading to millions of tons of electronic trash every year.
According to the Global E-waste Monitor, the world generated over 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste in 2019 alone—and this number is expected to grow even more. You can check out more about this global issue here:

Why Should We Care?
E-waste may look harmless, but it’s actually full of toxic materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium. When these devices are thrown away carelessly or burned in open air, they release harmful chemicals into the environment. This can lead to air, soil, and water pollution, affecting not only nature but also human health.
And here’s something most people don’t know: e-waste also contains valuable materials like gold, silver, and copper. When we don’t recycle electronics properly, we waste all those resources.

Who Is Affected?
A lot of e-waste from developed countries ends up in places like Ghana, India, and Nigeria, where it’s dismantled by informal workers—sometimes even children—without any protection. These communities face high levels of pollution, health risks, and poor working conditions.
